Even though I'm not always very good at expressing feelings about "sentimental" things, it doesn't mean that I don't care. Over the last several years, and especially since Mason was born, I've decided to be a little more expressive about things (it's a work in progress) and so I decided to post a little about my views on posterity. Most people gradually gain appreciation aspects of our heritage as we get older and I'm no different. I think I can look at myself and appreciate many things that I inherited from my parents. One thing that is/was always important to my parents is the importance of family and I feel that way too.
Nothing brought greater joy to my mother than to spend time with her grandchildren, she would go to any (and I mean ANY) activity they were in and absolutely love it. This is one of my most cherished pictures because it captures that joy perfectly.
I got my first chance to experience that same joy the day after Mason was born when we very first got to "meet" him.
I've often pondered why, for some men, having the family name carried on is important. I think I would have been OK had I only had daughters, but having sons was so much fun (well, most of the time anyway), and maybe what some of us men want is to feel like we were good husbands and fathers, then to see our sons become good husbands and fathers. This point was vividly driven home when Mason was born and to see Damen's paternal instinct kick in and watch his interactions with Mason over these months has been amazing.
Having the family name carried on is important to my father, who at 94 years old was so excited to learn that Damen and Christy were expecting a boy. So after many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren we finally have a 4 generation Burnham picture.
